Our first year of blogging is coming to an end, but we are looking forward to finding reinforcements for next year to make our blog BIGGER and BOLDER in September!!

While we will miss our fifth grade team, we know new writers will give us different ideas and fresh eyes. As we look back on our first year, we realize we have learned a great deal. We know we have a big responsibility to know our audience, inform them of what is really happening at Gold Rush, and provide a kids’ perspective of our school.

To quote our first post, “Come back to get the ‘woof’ about the Golden Retrievers.”

Book Fair

They are sure loving these books!

What an exciting book fair this year! Although it is only day 3 of the book fair, they have already had to order popular books twice. The most popular books are: Ranger in Time, Plants vs. Zombies, The One and Only Ivan, and Duckling gets a Cookie. 25% of the money goes back to GRE, but we get 50% if we buy Scholastic books. The total sales from Monday and Tuesday are $7,000. The hours left are: Wednesday from 8-5, Thursday from 8-7 and it is the Legend Art Honor Society students’ craft night, and Friday from 8-5.

Community Garden

How it Started:

Have you heard about the community garden that the school is trying to make? If you have, this is how it started. Mrs. Shepperd’s class schemed up the idea to grow a garden with fresh fruits and vegetables to sell in the lunch room. They were doing a writing project and ended up talking about vegetables. Many kids wanted fresh picked vegetables in the lunch room and they decided to do research. They calculated the costs for the garden and tools for it. Then, they wrote a persuasive essay, drew  landscaping plans, and presented these materials to Mrs. Brown, the principal, and the PTO. Unfortunately, they immediately turned the idea down because too many kids could be allergic or people could come and vandalize the fruits and vegetables. They did suggest the idea of gathering the fruits and vegetables when they are ripe and delivering them to the Parker Task Force to give to homeless people and families in need. Mrs. Shepperd and her class agreed to that idea so, the PTO donated 1,000 dollars to the cause to jump start operation Fresh Fruit. They still need 900 dollars or more so our smart thinkers in student council have drummed up an idea to host a read-a-thon fundraiser on Friday, April 17th just for the cause.You can bring in some change and wear your pajamas. All the money you bring in will go towards the garden, and soon we will be on our way to giving back to our community.

New Rock Wall in the Gym

It seems like the Digger Dash was forever ago, but all that running really paid off. After the Digger Dash, we used most of the money raised to install a new rock climbing wall in the gym. So far most of the classes have used it, already playing multiple games. One of those games is actually hide and seek. Everyone seems to love the new climbing wall.  This wall is a new favorite thing to use in the gym. It has even gotten more popular than the ropes. But this wall is more than it seems. If you really look close at it, you can see that all the different colors form shapes of mountains.  But be careful not to pass the red line! That I assure you is a bad idea. To make things even better, the wall is not only for the kids to use, the teachers have used it too! If you have not gotten the chance to use the wall, you should really look forward to using it, and if you have used it, I’m sure you are excited for the next time.

Math Olympiad

Math Olympiad has had an amazing year. Starting on October 7, we have been competing with kids all over the country. We practice with difficult problems that use critical thinking. We have done 4 of 5 contests with five questions each. We have about 40 kids that participate in grades 3-5. Two parents, Mr. Holt and Mr. Anderson, help us each week. The teachers in charge this year are Mrs. Barta and Ms. Meredith. We will meet until spring break, and then have a celebration in May.

Lego Club Comes to GRE

There is now a new Lego Club at Gold Rush Elementary. If you like legos this is the club for you. All you do is build, build, build legos non stop.  You build huge lego buildings, lego planes, and you can even build lego cities with friends. It is a really fun club to be in. If you like legos you should try to join. There are not many people in the club yet, but when you are done reading this article I hope there will be.

I talked to fellow GRE student Connor Milligan, and he said, “The Lego Club is a great place to excel in building up your creativity and imagination. If you love to build legos this is the club for you. It is the most fun club I have ever been a part of.”

I also talked to fellow GRE student Deidra VonFrame, and she said, “Lego club is a great place to build up your imagination and not only think up the stuff you want to build but also see it out of your mind. This is a great club if you love to work with Legos.”

I sure hope from these words of wisdom you have built up the courage to join the Lego club.

New Instruments in the Music Room!

Even though the Digger Dash seems like a while back, your hard work is still paying off! Mrs. Petty, the music teacher, just received a new set of drums bought with the hard earned Digger Dash money! They are tunable, and come in various sizes for maximum comfort to people of all ages! I for one had a blast performing my canon with the new drums! They are a bit heavier than the original drums. Personally I think that makes it easier to play. It’s a tad more grounded and doesn’t move as easily. I hope you get the opportunity to enjoy these new drums as well. But wait, there’s more! Teachers and staff have been able to use the drums as well! On Friday, February 13, a teacher work day, many members of the Gold Rush staff got to try out the new drums with Mrs. Petty! They had a blast creating and performing music and I can almost guarantee you will have fun too! See you in the music room!
